Have you ever heard about sexual arousal by certain fabrics, most commonly by latex, leather, PVC and silk? Touching, seeing, smelling or hearing the fabric can act as a stimulus for sexual gratification. It is known as fabric fetish in the BDSM & kink community. Personally, I love wearing items made of these fabrics. Whether it is a rubber catsuit, a shiny pair of PVC boots, silky stockings or a leather mini skirt.
Latex Leather PVC & Silk
One of the most popular fabric among kinksters is latex. The word ‘latex’ originates from the New Latin language and it means fluid. Natural latex comes from the sap (liquid) of the rubber tree. It is eco-friendly, sustainable though relatively pricey. It is versatile and because of this, it is ideal for creating BDSM costumes from it. Furthermore, there is a popular saying that wearing natural latex feels like a second skin. And it is very true.
Synthetic latex or vinyl, on the other hand, is much cheaper than natural latex. One of the most popular vinyl is PVC (polyvinyl chloride). PVC costumes and boots are very much in demand.
Leather & Faux
Another popular natural fabric is leather. The earliest evidence of leather use dates back to prehistoric times. The so-called leather subculture expanded in the community after the war in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Leather is ideal material for creating harnesses, pants, boots and other BDSM items.
There is synthetic version of leather, called faux (PU polyurethane), which is petroleum- based. It is a much cheaper and less sophisticated version of genuine leather. Faux hand cuffs, collars and clothes are quite trendy, mainly because of it’s affordability and also because it is easier to maintain.
Silk & Satin
Silk is natural protein fabric and originates as a protective layer. It is non-abrasive and relatively expensive. Though it is widely available these days, is is still considered a luxurious material. Silk bondage ropes, blindfolds and hand restraints are great additions to a BDSM tool collection .
Satin is a cheaper alternative to silk. It is made of polyester, and often blended with other fabrics. There are some very nice satin lingerie sets and restrains available on the market and they are definitely very affordable.
Allergies
I would like to mention that wearing fabrics like latex, leather or any synthetic version of them can cause allergies on the skin (like itchiness, hives swelling, runny nose, anaphylaxis and more). For this reason, it is important to experiment with these fabrics before wearing them for extensive period of time.
